Our Story

Our story begins over bottomless cups of coffee. Our founders, Gennine and Sue, sat together in the same carvery restaurant for days and weeks on end, thinking about the security sector – and how they might improve it.

Gennine and Sue had been working together for a while, as dog handlers with twenty-eight years’ combined experience. In past lives they’d worked in security as bailiffs and recruiters, but their passion for dogs – and how they can help make people and property safer – had by this time led them fully to commit to a career in the security sector.

In those carvery conversations, they began to realise how they might be able to offer a service that was even better than those already on offer in the sector, by drawing on their knowledge of – and sympathy for – the canine companions in their care.

Put simply, Sue and Gennine thought that happy dogs performed better – and that the same could go for a new security firm, too.  All those bottomless cups of coffee fuelled a new company launch, and Kopek Security and Facilities Ltd was launched. (In case you’re wondering, Köpek is Turkish for dog.)

Since then, Kopek has gone from strength to strength: just one year after launch, Gennine and Sue were awarded the 2019 Women’s Entrepreneur of the Year honour at the English Women’s Awards; and by the summer of 2022 Kopek had grown from two people drinking coffee in a restaurant to 220 staff and counting.

The secret? Treating staff, customers – and dogs! – as family. Just as our dogs are not tools but colleagues, so Kopek clients are given a level of respect and attention that we don’t believe is matched anywhere else. Our staff are encouraged to enjoy their work; our corporate culture is about flexibility and efficiency aligned. For us, security isn’t just a job; it’s who we are.
